You can vote absentee in person at your county absentee election manager's office from Wednesday, Sept 9. Alabama has no no-excuse early voting, so you must give one of the statutory reasons — such as being away from the county on Election Day, illness, a 10-hour work shift, or caregiving. Alabama has no no-excuse early in-person voting. Voters meeting a listed absentee reason (e.g. absent from county, illness, 10-hour work shift, caregiver) may vote absentee, including in person at the county Absentee Election Manager's office.
Absentee voting for the November 3 general election opened on Wednesday, Sept 9, 2026. From that day your county's absentee election manager has the ballots on hand and sends one to every voter whose absentee application has been approved. Alabama has no early voting, and you must give one of the statutory reasons to vote absentee.
Online registration (requires an Alabama driver's license or non-driver ID) must be submitted before 11:59 PM on October 19. Mailed registration form must be postmarked no later than October 19. In-person registration must be received before the close of business on October 19.
Absentee (excuse required) applications sent by mail must be delivered to the county Absentee Election Manager by Oct 27; hand-delivered applications are accepted through Oct 29.
Mailed absentee ballots must be received by the county Absentee Election Manager by noon on Election Day (a postmark is not enough). If you hand-deliver your own ballot, it must be in the office by close of business (no later than 5 PM) on Monday, November 2. Military and overseas voters have different rules.
Alabama fixes one statewide municipal election day in statute: Ala. Code § 11-46-21 places the regular municipal election on the fourth Tuesday in August 2025 and quadrennially after that, so the next one falls on Tuesday, August 28, 2029 (August 1, 2029 is a Wednesday, making the Tuesdays August 7, 14, 21 and 28). A short list of cities elects on its own four-year cycle under local acts instead — Montgomery, Mountain Brook, Scottsboro and Talladega vote on the fourth Tuesday in August 2027, and Huntsville in August 2028 — so check with your city clerk if you live in one of those.
