Absentee ballots require a qualifying reason (e.g. disability, religious observance, work/caregiving during all polling hours). A request for a ballot to be mailed must reach your clerk by noon Monday, Nov 2. In person, you can request and cast an absentee ballot at the clerk's office until 5:00 PM on Nov 2.
Completed absentee ballots — mailed, delivered by you, or delivered by an eligible family member or care-facility delivery agent — must reach your town or city clerk by 5:00 PM on Election Day, Nov 3. Postmarks do not count, so mail it early.
You can register in person at your polling place on Election Day (be in line before polls close). Before Election Day, registration with your town/city clerk or supervisors of the checklist closes at the final checklist session, which each town sets between Oct 21 and Oct 28, 2026 — check with your local clerk. New Hampshire state law sets one date for town elections: the second Tuesday in March, every year. In 2027 that is Tuesday, March 9. A town can move to an alternative date only by a vote of its own meeting under RSA 40:14 or RSA 31:94-a, or by adopting a municipal charter.

State law fixes a second statutory town election date, the second Tuesday in May, which is Tuesday, May 11, 2027. It applies only in towns that voted at a previous town meeting to move their elections there under RSA 31:94-a, or that chose the May date in a municipal charter. Ask your town clerk which date your town uses.
You can register at your polling place on election day, Tuesday, May 11, 2027, and vote the same day.

In any state election, a town or city clerk shall not accept any completed absentee ballots delivered to the clerk after 5:00 p.m. on election day except as provided in RSA 657:21-a, V and RSA 659:20-a.
