Vermont voting deadlines for the November 3, 2026 election

You do not need to request a general election ballot: the state automatically mails one to every active registered voter, starting no later than Mon Sept 21 and finishing by Thu Oct 1. Anyone needing a ballot (e.g. new registrants or moved voters) may request one until 5 p.m. or the clerk's closing time on Monday, Nov 2; if the clerk has no hours that day, the last day the office is open.

Early in-person voting at the town clerk's office is possible until the clerk's early ballot request deadline: 5 p.m. or closing on Monday, Nov 2 (or the clerk's last open day before the election). No excuse needed. Vote early in person at your town or city clerk's office during its hours. Town clerks must receive general election ballots no later than Sat Sept 19, 2026 (45 days before), and a clerk hands ballots to in-person voters once they arrive; the exact first day and office hours vary by town, so check with your clerk.

No registration deadline: register at your town/city clerk's office during business hours before the election, or at your polling place during polling hours on Election Day (polls close 7 p.m.). Vermont has no registration deadline; you can register on Election Day at your polling place. First-time registrants by mail or online must include a copy of an acceptable ID.

Your ballot must be RECEIVED, not just postmarked. In person at your town clerk's office or in your town's ballot drop box: before the office closes on Mon Nov 2 (check your clerk's hours). By mail: it must ARRIVE at the clerk's office before polls close at 7:00 p.m. on Tue Nov 3, so mail it well ahead of time. On Election Day: hand it to the election officials at your own polling place before 7:00 p.m. The state's voter guidance tells voters to use the Nov 2 clerk deadline or the polling place, so do not count on last-minute mail.
