Absentee/mail ballots for North Dakota residents become available on Thursday, Sept 24, 2026, and county auditors start sending them out to voters who have an application on file from that day. Ballots for military and overseas voters go out earlier, on Sept 18.
The Secretary of State lists Monday, November 2, 2026 as the absentee application deadline. Any voter can vote absentee, but apply well before then so you have time to get your ballot back by Election Day. Absentee voting begins Sept 24, 2026.
Absentee ballots must be RECEIVED by the county auditor (by mail, county drop box, or in person) before polls close on Election Day. Postmarks don't count, and ballots aren't accepted at polling places.
Nominating petitions for city office cannot be circulated or signed before January 1, 2028. Nominating petitions must be in the city auditor's hands before 4 p.m. on Monday, April 10, 2028.

North Dakota statute sets one date for city elections statewide: the second Tuesday in June of each even-numbered year, held together with the statewide primary. June 1, 2028 is a Thursday, so the second Tuesday is June 13, 2028. There are no regular North Dakota city elections in 2027; anything held on another date is a special election.
