Applies to Alaska municipalities that have not set a different date by ordinance — Anchorage and some other home-rule municipalities vote in April instead, not to the whole state. To vote in an Alaska municipal election you must already be registered at an address in that municipality 30 days beforehand. For an October 6, 2026 election that was Sunday, September 6, 2026, a date that has already passed.
Register or update online (requires a current Alaska driver's license or state ID) by Sunday, October 4, 30 days before Election Day. Mailed registration must be postmarked or received by October 4 (a Sunday). Register in person by Sunday, October 4. Division of Elections offices are open for registration Saturday Oct 3, 10 AM-4 PM, and Sunday Oct 4, 12 PM-4 PM.

Alaska law sets a single default date for local elections: AS 29.26.040 puts a municipality's regular election on the first Tuesday of October each year, which in 2026 is Tuesday, October 6 (October 1, 2026 is a Thursday, so the first Tuesday is October 6). The same statute lets any municipality choose a different date, or a different interval of years, by ordinance — Anchorage, for instance, votes in April — so confirm the date with your city or borough clerk.
The Alaska Division of Elections begins its first mailing of absentee by-mail ballots to in-state civilian voters on Friday, Oct 9, 2026. Ballots for military and overseas voters, and for voters who asked for a remote advance ballot, go out much earlier, by Saturday, Sept 19.
Absentee in-person and early voting begins 15 days before Election Day; no excuse needed. Absentee in-person voting continues through Election Day. Locations and hours vary by site. No-excuse absentee in-person/early voting runs Oct 19 through Election Day at designated locations; hours vary by location (regional offices have weekend hours on Oct 24-25 and Oct 31-Nov 1).
By-mail absentee applications must be received by Oct 24. Applications for ballots delivered by fax/online (electronic transmission) must be received by 5:00 PM Alaska Time on Nov 2.
